Chloé is a fashion brand from Paris, France . It was founded in 1952 by fashion designer Gabriella Aghion . Its main products are high-end ready-to-wear clothing, and it also operates in the fields of handbags, leather goods, shoes, accessories, perfumes, etc. Chloé's first classic handbag is the "Paddington bag" .
Gabriella Aghion (1921-2014) was born in Alexandria , Egypt. She grew up in a wealthy family and settled in Paris, France , with her husband Raymond Aghion at the age of 24. With the idea of self-reliance, she decided to work in the fashion design industry. In the early 1950s, Gaby Aghion found that the demand for the fashion market was rising, and the price of high-end custom-made clothing was prohibitive for many people. Under such circumstances, she took the lead in proposing the concept of "premium ready-to-wear" (prêt-à-porter/Ready-To-Wear) and founded "Chloé" in 1952, one of the earliest high-end ready-to-wear brands in the world . The brand name is taken from the name of Gaby Aghion's friend Chloé Huymans .
Gaby Aghion's partner, Jacques Lenoir , joined in 1953 to run the company, while she focused on fashion design, trying to get rid of the old-fashioned and restrained styles of haute couture and use high-quality fabrics to create elegant, refined and soft-lined modern clothing.
Chloé's first fashion show was held in 1956 at the Café de Flore, a gathering place for artists and writers in Paris. Unlike the traditional practice of the Parisian fashion industry, Gaby Aghion chose a café on the Left Bank of Paris as the show venue , reflecting the vigor and vitality of Chloé as a young brand.
Since 1958, Chloé has employed a number of young fashion designers, such as Gérard Pipart , Maxime de la Falaise , Michèle Rosier , Graziella Fontana and Karl Lagerfeld , to turn the ideas of young women into reality with romantic, fashionable and charming designs, thus quickly achieving success.
Karl Lagerfeld joined Chloé in 1964 and launched the Tertulia dress the following year, with hand-painted Art Nouveau patterns, setting the tone for Chloé's bohemian style in the 1970s . In 1972, Chloé opened its first store in the 7th arrondissement of Paris .
Karl Lagerfeld became the only fashion designer of Chloé in 1974. He worked with fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez, models Pat Cleveland and Donna Jordan for a long time, using flowing, soft silk dresses to show the casual female romanticism . He worked for Chloé for 20 years until he left in 1984 , ending his first cooperation with Chloé. The Chloé brand was acquired by Alfred Dunhill
in 1985 (later affiliated with Richemont Group). Two years later, French fashion designer Martine Sitbon was appointed as creative director . Her design inspiration often came from classical menswear and cabaret costumes, continuing the soft style of Chloé.
From 1992 to 1997, Karl Lagerfeld returned briefly and worked with Chloé again. Then, Stella McCartney, then 25 years old, was appointed as the new creative director , becoming the youngest fashion designer in Chloé's history. She used a street style mix of vintage women's corsets, low-waist pants and printed T-shirts to inject a more sexy rock element into the brand .
In 2001, Stella McCartney left Chloé and her deputy and friend Phoebe Philo took over as creative director . In the same year, Chloé founded See by Chloé, a sub-brand targeting the young market , with products covering ready-to-wear, handbags and accessories.
Chloé's first classic handbag , the "Paddington bag" , was born in 2005. The bag is made of soft leather, and its biggest features are the large lock and the key decoration hanging on the handle, making it the first generation of Chloé's "It Bag".
After Phoebe Philo left, Swedish fashion designer Paulo Melim Andersson and British designer Hannah MacGibbon successively served as creative directors, launching the Paraty series (2008) and the Marcie series (2010), both of which have become classic handbags of Chloé.
The Paraty handbag has a trapezoidal outline, which can cleverly form a triangle with the upright handle. The bag is decorated with tubular leather and metal lock edges, full of the retro feeling of the 1970s; the Marcie handbag is characterized by a curved outline and a braided handle, reflecting the style of nomadic peoples.
In 2011, Clare Waight Keller became the creative director and launched two classic handbags for Chloé - Drew series (2013) and Faye series (2014). To commemorate the brand's 60th anniversary, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris held the "Chloé Attitudes" exhibition in 2012 , showcasing Chloé's clothing, accessories and archives from the 1960s to the present.
In June 2016, Chloé launched the Chloe.com website , marking its official entry into the e-commerce field. The current creative director, Natacha Ramsay-Levi , has been in office since 2017 and has launched the Tess series and Roy series of handbags.
