The HERMÈS 2025 Spring/Summer collection brings the new Birkin à l'envers handbag , which uses a "subversive" design that flips the inside out and inverts the front and back to reshape the classic platinum bag. The ingenious deconstruction design injects a new visual language into the Birkin handbag, and also perfectly reveals the craftsmanship details inside the bag.

The History of the Birkin Bag

The Birkin handbag is called "Platinum Bag" in Chinese , which perfectly reflects its noble status in the bag industry. This handbag was born in 1984 and was named after Jane Birkin , a British actress and European fashion icon in the 1960s .

In 1981, Jane Birkin met Jean-Louis Dumas, then CEO of Hermès, on a plane. When she was putting things into the overhead luggage compartment, she accidentally spilled the contents of her bag all over the floor. She complained to Dumas, who was sitting next to her, that she couldn't find a practical bag suitable for women. Dumas immediately took out a pen and paper to discuss with Birkin and sketched a bag.

Inspired by this encounter, Hermès designed the platinum bag named after Birkin. Since its launch in 1984, the Birkin bag has become a loyal fan of celebrities with its elegant appearance, sophisticated workmanship, practical attributes and scarcity, and is recognized as the most valuable classic bag .

Design inspiration

The Birkin à l'envers handbag made its debut at the 2025 Spring/Summer women's fashion show. This season's works are themed "Inside the Workshop" , starting from the source of the workshop, exploring the experimental journey of each work from conception and design to reality, in order to pay tribute to the brand's craftsmanship tradition and continuous innovation.

"à l'envers" means "flip" or "upside down" in French. As the name suggests, Birkin à l'envers is directly translated as "flipped platinum bag" . We can see that the zippered inner pocket of the bag has become an external decoration, the iconic Touret buckle has been moved to the back, and the splicing of leather and canvas further highlights the geometric structure of the bag, revealing the originally hidden craftsmanship details.

The inside-out design not only gives the Birkin a new look, but also makes it more convenient to use. The bag is designed as an open tote bag , and the original flap is only for decoration. The front zipper pocket and the back pocket are convenient for taking and putting items at hand, and the size is about the size of an iPad mini.

The most recognizable Touret buckle on the bag has been moved to the inside, and the leather strap that runs through the bag can still adjust the width of the bag opening and close to improve the safety of the bag.

Material and craftsmanship details

The reason why Birkin is regarded as the "hard currency" in the bag industry is not only because of its classic and durable appearance, but also because of its durability. Each Birkin bag is made of top-quality flawless leather and is fully handmade by bag craftsmen with more than 5 years of experience . Each bag takes more than 40 hours to make .

This Birkin à l'envers handbag is made of golden brown Barénia Faubourg calfskin with natural H canvas and open stitching . The contrast between the two materials and colors makes the line structure of the bag clearer and further highlights the exquisite craftsmanship details. The addition of canvas also adds a relaxed and leisurely mood to the bag. Another major feature of the Hermès handbag is that it is all sewn with "Saddle Stitch" . This two-needle-one-thread technique has a history of more than 100 years and cannot be achieved by machines. It must be sewn by craftsmen stitch by stitch, and maintain precise spacing and strength to ensure that the bag remains as reliable as before.

The bottom is decorated with leather edging and metal feet , which make the bag stand upright and protect the bottom from wear and tear.

What can this bag hold?

The Birkin à l'envers handbag adopts the most classic and practical size 35. It has a certain weight in the hand, and it has a strong aura whether it is for daily outings or commuting. We put a MacBook computer, iPhone, cosmetic bag, notebook, tissue, perfume, lipstick, keys and other items in the bag, and there is still about one-third of the space available for free use.
