GUCCI redesigned the Sylvie handbag, which was born in 1969 , and launched the new Sylvie 1969 series handbags this autumn and winter . The bag adopts a semi-rigid suitcase structure , with golden chains and buckles on emerald green patent leather , and a Marina anchor chain shoulder strap, like an exquisite classic jewelry box.

Design inspiration

GUCCI's first Sylvie handbag was born in 1969. It was the first time that metal chains and Buckle buckle elements were used in handbag design, becoming one of the brand's most classic handbags. Creative director Alessandro Michele drew inspiration from the classic Sylvie handbags, recreating the handbag shape, metal chain buckle, envelope-style flap and other elements, and designed the new Sylvie 1969 series handbags, which is not only a tribute to the brand's classics, but also a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the human moon landing.

Different from the Sylvie series handbags launched in 2016, the Sylvie 1969 is more faithful to the original design of the 1960s, using a slender metal chain strap and a regular rectangular outline , retaining the padded structure of the flap edge , and adding a Marina anchor chain shoulder strap , the overall shape is more classic.

The metal chain and Buckle buckle are the iconic elements of the Sylvie handbag. It is half-inlaid in the stitching groove in the center of the flap. The fine cutting and polishing process makes the chain look particularly shining.

The buckle adopts a hidden nested design. Just rotate the buckle engraved with the GUCCI logo 90° clockwise, and then remove the buttonhole from the raised position. The operation can be completed with one hand.

The bag cover is stitched with double lines on the back of the bag, and the bottom length is slightly shorter than the width of the bag. The rounded corners and inward-facing lines make the bag layered. The metal chain extends all the way to the back, echoing the three round rivets used to fix the bag cover .

The front of the flap recreates the envelope structure and padded frame of the 1969 version of the Sylvie handbag , making the three-dimensional effect of the solid-color bag more prominent.

· Patent leather & padded handles·

The exterior of the bag is made of emerald green patent leather with a little mirror reflection effect, showing changing colors under different lighting . The biggest advantage of patent leather is that it is not easy to fade and is dustproof and waterproof . It can still maintain its luster after long-term use, but it is relatively easy to scratch, so try to avoid collision with sharp objects. The handle is filled with material, which not only maintains the upright arched contour, but also has a full and soft feel, making it more comfortable to hold for a long time. The curved lines of the metal link buckle are consistent with the metal chain structure on the back.

Marina Chain Anchor Chain Shoulder Strap

The bag also comes with a detachable metal chain shoulder strap , which is inspired by the anchor chain used in sailing . It dates back to the 1950s and has been used in the GUCCI Marina Chain jewelry series since the 1960s.

The slender double-hole chain buckle is decorated between the thin chains, which fits the jewelry box-like handbag very well. It is fixed to both sides of the handle through the bottom slide buckle. It is very chic to use as a shoulder strap or naturally droop as a decoration, and can also meet more matching needs.

· Box structure·

The bag adopts a semi-rigid suitcase structure , like a miniature antique suitcase, with a front and back two-piece opening and closing, and metal feet embedded in the bottom to prevent friction and scratches on the bottom of the bag.

The lid is lined with emerald green suede , while the interior is paneled with camel grained leather and has dark green oiled edges.

The gussets on both sides allow the bag to be opened and closed at an angle of about 40°, making it easy to access the contents and prevent spills. There is a flat inner pocket on the back for storing thin items such as cards.

What can this bag hold?

Because the bag is a hard structure, the sides cannot be extended after closing, so it is more suitable for carrying relatively thin items. We put an iPhone X, a notebook and pen, a card holder, lip gloss, perfume and Airpods in it, and it is fully equipped for daily travel.
