CELINE is a well-known fashion house from France . It was founded by French fashion designer Céline Vipiana in 1945 and is now part of the LVMH Group . Since February 2018, Hedi Slimane has served as the brand's artistic, creative and image director . In addition to the women's wear series, a men's wear series will also be launched.
The CELINE brand was born in Paris, France in 1945. Its founder is French fashion designer Céline Vipiana . She and her husband Robert first operated a children's shoe customization store at 52 Malte Street in Paris . Later, the business scale was gradually expanded, and the number of stores increased to 4 by 1948. In the early 1960s, CELINE began to develop into handbags, leather goods, perfumes, scarves and other fields. In order to launch handbag products, CELINE built its first leather goods factory in Florence, Italy
in 1966. The following year, CELINE launched its first ready-to-wear product line and officially entered the women's fashion industry.
The original CELINE logo was a "red elephant" designed by French cartoonist Raymond Peynet. Out of his love for equestrian sports, Robert Vipiana changed the trademark to "American Sulky" in 1966. Five years later, CELINE combined the letter "C" and the carriage into a pattern and launched the "C Sulky" canvas and the first canvas bag .
In 1973, Céline Vipiana drew inspiration from the chains around the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and designed the double C emblem to reflect CELINE's image as a local brand in Paris. The "two-wheeled single-seat carriage" and "Arc de Triomphe chains" are no longer used as brand logos, but have become CELINE's most classic pattern designs. From
the 1970s to the 1980s, CELINE expanded rapidly around the world, opening boutiques in Monte Carlo, Geneva, Hong Kong, Lausanne, Toronto, Beverly Hills and other places. At the same time, the LVMH Group had just been established, and Chairman Bernard Arnault decided to invest in CELINE, and finally acquired the brand in its entirety in 1996 for 2.7 billion francs (about US$540 million).
The following year, Céline Vipiana passed away, and Michael Kors was appointed as the brand's first ready-to-wear designer . Two years later, he was promoted to the brand's creative director . Michael Kors' fashion design is characterized by accessories, and his representative works are the Boogie series (2002) and the Poulbot series (2003). In 2004, Michael Kors left CELINE, and the creative director was successively Roberto Menichetti and Ivana Omazic . In 2008, Phoebe Philo, the former creative director of Chloé , returned to the fashion industry and was invited to become the creative director of CELINE . Phoebe Philo's design style tends to be minimalist . She created many popular handbags for CELINE in her own style, such as the low-key Classic Box series ; the large-capacity Luggage series ; the shopping bag-shaped Cabas series ; the simple and practical Trapeze series , etc. The Luggage series is one of CELINE's classic handbags, and has launched styles of different sizes, colors and materials. The front of the handbag is square, and the side is a pair of wide wings extending outward. The joint between the handle and the bag body and the zipper form a "smiley face", so it is called the "smiley face bag" . Based on the design of Luggage, CELINE also launched the Phantom series , which greatly increased the space of the bag by further widening the wings. In November 2014, CELINE moved its headquarters to 16 Vivienne Street in Paris, the former location of Hôtel Colbert de Torcy. This building was built in 1653 and became the headquarters of the Paris Stock Exchange in the 18th century. It is one of the national cultural relics of France. In early 2018, LVMH Group announced the appointment of Hedi Slimane, former artistic director of YSL , as the new creative director of CELINE . He officially took office on February 1 and was responsible for guiding the design of all CELINE products and leading the brand to launch new products such as men's haute couture, ready-to-wear and perfume. Currently, CELINE has about 140 stores worldwide and employs more than 1,800 employees.
